Una de las razones de este descenso, explica The Economist, es la disminución de la tasa de natalidad durante los últimos 50 años, en comparación con la década de los 60 cuando las mujeres mexicanas tenían en promedio seis hijos y todos compartían la misma educación religiosa. Ahora, que el promedio de hijos por familia es de dos o tres, el crecimiento del catolicismo se ha ido frenando.

Dentro de este mismo contexto, cada vez más mexicanos se declaran ajenos a cualquier religión; mientras que otros, explica el medio británico, se convierten en el blanco del “proselitismo oportuno” de otros cultos que, en su mayoría, conforman ofertas cristianas de tipo evangélico, pentecostal, bíblicas no evangélicas o protestantes históricas.

Entre las disidencias católicas figuran grupos como los Testigos de Jehová, los Adventistas del Séptimo Día y sectas como la Luz del Mundo. Según el Inegi, los Testigos de Jehová son la adscripción con mayor porcentaje de creyentes y México es el país de Latinoamérica donde más difusión han logrado; tienen presencia ya en 90% de los municipios de la República.

En el sureste de México, el número de católicos se ha reducido a casi la mitad, debido a los huecos que ha ido dejando tanto el gobierno como la iglesia católica, según The Economist. Chiapas se ha convertido en el estado con menor número de fieles y en municipios como Bejucal de Ocampo en la Sierra Madre, solo el 19% de los habitantes son católicos.
